Good advice! I've found much of the same to be true in my recent experience with the Zend Framework. Finding a few good authors who provide a tutorial or two has proven so much more valuable than the book(s) I've purchased.

I encourage folks learning a new framework to not be afraid to extend features in their initial application building exercises. You can learn as much from breaking and fixing something as you can from just following the steps.

Thanks for the comments, Joe! I still have a lot to learn with Django, so some of the features mentioned may take a while (plus I'm spending this week in classes and next week on vacation in Oregon, so I may not get back to things soon).

I recommend giving Django a try, if only to see how it feels to you. I think that the major factor on deciding between the two is how easy it is for you to use, especially in my case. There happened to be a lot of things leading me to Python, so that may have helped push me toward Django some, too. It kind of felt like Rails was pushing me to do one thing when I expected another, and that might just have been the fact that I was less experienced with MVC frameworks in general.

I've found a few examples of how to integrate Django with AJAX, but they're not as easy to follow (or as plentiful) as the Rails examples. I realized coming in that it wouldn't be as easy, but Django does let you choose your own JavaScript library, so maybe that's good in the end. Deployment seemed to be easier with Django, but that might also be because I'm more familiar with the environment on which I was deploying it.

So basically there are tons of factors, but since in my case I got to choose whichever I was more comfortable with and I don't have any outside pressure to choose one over the other, I think I'm going with Django.

Hey Alex,

The quotational site looks pretty cool, I'll be curious to see how you implement the "Submit your favorite quotes" addition. Does django provide any built-in support for JS/AJAX libraries? If so I could see you doing some cool live search / filter / sorting tricks.

I've been meaning to try out django one of these days before I get to deep into Ruby on Rails (I'm already using Rails for a couple of projects at work). Just curious, what advantages have you found django has over Rails?

I didn't know you read all the articles in the Joplin Globe. I thought we all only "read" the weather map. I'm so glad you blog so I can learn what I should have heard ... am I not listening closely enough? I remember you did lots of reports on the baseball teams. Glad you have that covered for us, just in case I need to "phone a friend".

Yeah, Dale Murphy is Mormon. He was a mission president in Boston from 1997-2000, also, which was just before Walt got there. The Braves were always on TV, too. He became interested in the church because of a teammate of his when he was in the Minor Leagues, Barry Bonnell. You can read more about that in <a href="http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=0e0b8949f2f6b010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&hideNav=1" rel="nofollow">a very old article in the Ensign (from 1985)</a>.

So a couple things have changed since the 80s, but you probably already knew about most of them. The Montreal Expos moved to D.C. and are now the Washington Nationals, the Milwaukee Brewers are in the National League. There are four new teams, and I know you know about the older ones, the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins. You've probably heard of the Arizona Diamondbacks, but you might have missed the Tampa Bay Rays. They were called the Devil Rays for their first ten years, but they were renamed at the beginning of this season. And that about sums it up for the last 18 years or so of baseball history :)

I'm excited to see the Cubs with you guys when we go up there. Every baseball fan should have some desire to see a game in Wrigley Field.

I like that you like the Royals. :-) It is unique.

You missed mentioning the team I liked (I picked a couple so I could fit in with you boys): the A's ('cause I was born near Oakland) and then later the Braves ('cause didn't Dale Murphy play for them, and wasn't he Mormon? Also, it seemed like the Braves were good.)

I never actually watched their games, though. You know I wasn't into baseball as much as you. But I *did* have a really fun time at those two Royals games (didn't the Royals win that first game, 4-3? WHY do I remember that??). And I now know the names of all the MLB teams (whereas Nathan, a BOY, does not). All because of you! (I can often assign them to the appropriate league, also. Unless they've changed since the 80s. Have they changed since the 80s??)

A heck of a lot of people like the Cubs out here -- and EVERYWHERE, really -- and gosh, they really aren't very good. It can't be the only reason that people follow teams. :-)

Hey, thanks for the comments! It probably took you just as long to write them as it did for me to write the post... which would be about four months. Yeah, I guess you didn't take that long.

C.O.P.S. stands for Central Organization of Police Specialists.
M.A.S.K. stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand.

Those two shows were practically the same, but they were both awesome. Sorry I left out so many good ones - He-Man was good, and She-Ra was alright (I guess I never really watched this one much), but yeah, I guess I totally forgot the Smurfs. My Little Pony was definitely a show (of the 30-minute toy commercial variety), but I don't think we watched it much.

Tragically, there is no Voltron poster on my wall. I do have a bunch of my stuff up in our office, though, which means there's a Transformers poster Christian got me one time. I even have four newer Transformers on our bookshelf.

I agree about Garfield and Friends - this was one of the first shows that I made Julia rent with me from Blockbuster Online after we were married. I don't think she liked it much, but I loved it and could remember almost all of the episodes from the first season. I'll have to watch to see if it ever comes on sale.

There's plenty more to comment about, but I think Emmy want to do something. I'd better get out some old Transformers cartoons!
