One of our favorite talks is Elder Marvin J. Ashton&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/library.lds.org\/nxt\/gateway.dll\/Magazines\/Liahona\/2000.htm\/liahona%20april%202000.htm\/guide%20to%20family%20finance.htm\">Guide to Family Finance<\/a>, which was given to us by Julia&#8217;s bishop just before we got married. Another great resource is <a href=\"http:\/\/ce.byu.edu\/ed\/edweek\/handouts\/2006\/21.pdf\">a handout from Education Week at BYU (pdf)<\/a>. These resources break it down financial basics very well. The principles in here are simple and easy to understand, but they take some personal conviction to implement.<\/p>\n<p>The great part about these ideas is that they&#8217;re based on proven principles and common sense. Here are some of the basics<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start a budget<\/li>\n<li>Set money aside for emergencies<\/li>\n<li>Get out of debt<\/li>\n<li>Save money for the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These items all start with action words. If you want more information, a professor at BYU has set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/personalfinance.byu.edu\">great financial website<\/a> to help you learn about financial basics. It&#8217;s set up like a class, but all of the information is free and very rewarding.
