CSS by Example

When learning how to do things on a computer, I tend to learn best by example. I remember borrowing library books and entering BASIC code into our Tandy 1000 computer when I was younger, later tweaking the code so that I could make my own games. Programming is the same for me today; I like to find a good example, use it, and then tweak it and make it my own. With the ever-changing state of the Internet, however, it’s not easy or practical to find a library book with examples for website design. Instead, a good resource to learn CSS by example is at Dynamic Drive. The CSS section of their site is well designed as has many good examples. Give it a look!

The Month of May

I like May. It’s a pretty good month. Here are a few reasons why:

  • It’s our anniversary
  • School’s out for summer!!!
  • NBA Playoffs
  • NHL Playoffs (go Avs!)
  • Baseball on TV
  • It’s too early in the season for the Royals to be eliminated
  • Spring!!!
  • A new X-Men movie

I could probably write a whole post on each of those, but maybe I’m too busy enjoying some of those things to write much. All in all, it’s a good month!

Search Engine Optimization

Tom Dalton gave a good presentation yesterday about Search Engine Optimization. It was quite interesting, and he’s made the powerpoint slides available on his website. I liked that his presentation wasn’t to technically oriented. He stressed the fact that we shouldn’t try to read too much into numbers or things that we have heard. If you want to know how to do SEO, learn the basic principles and try them out for yourself. There’s no magic formula (unless you work for Google and write the ranking algorithm yourself).

Ask Gramps

There are a few Question and Answer websites out there, like Ask Yahoo! and BYU’s 100 Hour Board, but I just found out about a new Q&A website that is really good at answering all kinds of questions about Mormons. There are lots of different questions, and they’re written pretty clearly, even for those who aren’t familiar with the Mormon Church. This is a good resource to search for things that you’ve heard about mormons (we all hear them, and I’m not sure where they all come from). So if you have a question about Latter-day Saints, ask any mormon or Ask Gramps!

That’s right, woodchuck-chuckers!

It’s Groundhog Day!

Well, it’s groundhog day… again… the day we wait for the world’s most famous weatherman, Punxsutawney Phil, to predict the weather for us. What’s his prediction this year, you ask? Six more weeks of winter. That’s okay, though, because since 1887 we celebrate what Groundhog Day is really about: the parties! We get to watch the best movie ever made, eat some great food, and party! Well, actually only Phil has been celebrating since then, but we’ve made it our own tradition. Maybe someday, we’ll make it to the party at Gobbler’s Knob instead of quoting Bill Murray. Happy Groundhog Day!
